IRWA Certifications and our Designation, the SR/WA, will Position you as a Leader in the Right of Way Industry.

 NEW CAREER PATH PROGRAM

A number of substantial changes to the IRWA Right of Way Professional Career Path program, formally known as the Credentialing Program, were unveiled at the June International Educational Conference in Calgary. They were also explained on page 36 of the July/ August edition of the Right of Way Magazine, which you all should have received back in July. If not click: ROW Magazine- July2010.

Essentially IRWA, which is the new organizational brand, has added three new general designations that progressively reflect the steps of the evolving career path of the right of way professional leading up to the SR/WA certification, the highest level of recognition.  IRWA's New Career Path enables members to earn credentials while working toward the SR/WA Designation. The new certifications include Right of Way Agent (RWA), Associate Right of Way Professional (ARWP), Right of Way Professional (RWP), culminating with the SR/WA.  Since this was sent out to current and past candidates only, you may qualify for one of the new designations depending on how many classes you have completed.

SR/WA now stands for Senior Right of Way Professional, rather than Senior Member of the International Right of Way Association, probably because one no longer has to be member to participate in the certification program. This was meant to open it up to right of way professionals whose public sector employers are restricted from paying membership dues. This new inclusiveness should increase the ranks of certified professionals and increase the recognition and value of the designations and certifications for those holding them.

The specialty certification program will remain the same for now. The new designations are considered a generalist path for those not discipline specific. It was created in response to requests from the membership for a more flexible and accelerated program offering faster ways to receive certification. Specialty certifications can still be pursued in addition to the generalist path as is currently the case.

The new ROW Professional Career Path will take effect October 1, 2010.

IF YOUR ARE A CURRENT SR/WA CANDADATE:
To increase the rigor of the new program, an additional 40 units must be earned throughout the program to earn the new SR/WA Designation. Current SR/WA candidates are grandfathered into the existing program requirements for the term of their original candidacy only.  If they think they won’t be able to complete the requirements and submit their completion application before their candidacy expire, extensions may be applied for by filling out and submitting a new candidacy form by October 31, 2010. This will give candidates a complete 5-year period from the date of approval.

Grandfathering rights on the existing program will also apply to those members who are working on their SR/WA Designation but have not applied for candidacy yet. They also have until October 31, 2010 to submit their candidacy application to get locked in into the existing program.

The Senior Member designation is the most sought after distinction in the right of way field and a standard requirement for filling upper level postions.

The SR/WA Designation

SR/WA - Senior Member, International Right of Way Association - is the most prestigious professional designation granted by IRWA to members who have achieved professional status through experience, education and examination.

The SR/WA designation requires training and examination in several major right of way disciplines. The SR/WA designation says, "I have more than five years of right of way experience, plus I have had formal training in a wide variety of right of way areas."

The SR/WA professional may be a specialist in one area such as acquisition, relocation or law, but also must be familiar with the other disciplines associated with the right-of-way profession. The SR/WA designation is the only designation reflecting evidence of professional attainment in the right of way field.
